Solution: Lost In Space!

Last issue's puzzle was Lost In Space! It consisted of a disk which rotated within a circle to produce either 15 or 14 astronauts, depending on the disk's alignment. The challenge in the puzzle was to figure out how it worked. Instead of giving you the answer, I will provide a concrete aid to help you find the answer yourself. Reproduce the following diagram on a piece of paper.

Lost In Space hint.

Count the number of vertical lines. Then cut along the diagonal line and move the top triangle to the left until the vertical lines are aligned again. Count the lines once more. You'll notice that one of the lines disappears. This is the same principle used in making one of the astronauts disappear.
