Middle Grades

Awesome Addition and Super Subtraction (2-3)
Helping students master addition and subtraction concepts and operations.

  • Understand place value at concrete and representational stages
  • Develop meaning for addition and subtraction at concrete and representational stages
  • Understand addition and subtraction with and without regrouping using models and algorithms
  • Practice basic facts to achieve 100% mastery

Fabulous Fractions (4-6)
Using five hands-on models to give students the conceptual foundation for developing meaning and understanding of fractions.

  • Understand fair shares
  • Recognize fractional numbers as equal parts of a whole and as equal parts of a group or set
  • Recognize and understand the values and meaning of the numerator and denominator
  • Understand the relative size of fractions
  • Recognize and name equivalent fractions

    Materials: Fabulous Fractions book, Unit Square Transparency, Fraction Circle Model, Who Has? Card Game, Fraction Fringe, Plastic Pattern Blocks, Fraction Pattern Blocks

Geometry (3-5)
Building conceptual understanding of shape and dimension through hands-on geometry.

  • Explore the properties of three-dimensional models
  • Compose and decompose three-dimensional shapes
  • Construct two-dimensional shapes and observe their properties
  • Investigate lines, shapes, angles, congruency and similarity
  • Illustrate three-dimensional shapes using isometric dot paper

    Materials: Power Solids Set, Geoboard, Overhead Geoboard, Wooden Cubes, Spatial Visualization Tiles

Marvelous Multiplication (4-6)
Helping students master the concepts and operations of multiplication and division.

  • Master the concept of place value at concrete and representational stages
  • Develop meaning for multiplication and division at concrete and representational stages
  • Use models and algorithms to construct understanding
  • Explore historical connections and alternate ways to multiply and divide
  • Practice basic facts to achieve 100% mastery

Measurement (3-5)
Exploring the concepts of length, mass and volume measurement and the use of measurement tools and techniques.

  • Construct simple measurement tools
  • Explore linear measure including area and perimeter
  • Explore mass measure
  • Explore volume and capacity

Problem Solving (2-3)
Developing fluency with five key problem-solving strategies. Using and extending mathematical knowledge.
