Descriptions of Pre-Set Math Workshops
Upper Grades
Fabulous Fractions (4-6)
Using five hands-on models to give students the conceptual foundation
for developing meaning and understanding of fractions.
- Understand fair shares
- Recognize fractional numbers as equal parts of a whole and as equal
parts of a group or set
- Recognize and understand the values and meaning of the numerator
and denominator
- Understand the relative size of fractions
- Recognize and name equivalent fractions
Materials: Fabulous Fractions book, Unit Square Transparency,
Fraction Circle Model, Fraction Fringe, Plastic
Pattern Blocks, Fraction Pattern Blocks
Geometry (6-9)
Using hands-on experiences of paper cutting, geoboards, puzzles, sorting,
covering, and filling to help students understand geometric formulas
and dimensions.
- Area and perimeter formulas for two-dimensional figures
- Sorting two- and three-dimensional figures
- Pythagorean relationship
Materials: Looking at Geometry book, Wooden Cubes, Overhead
Geoboard, Power Solids
Investigations with Integers (6-9)
Develop an understanding of integers using different models
- Learn to add, subtract, multiply and divide integers
- Understand "why" answers are positive or negative
- Directional models, value models and playful practice
Materials: Positive vs Negative: Investigations with Integers book, Tile Spacers, one additional AIMS publication
Linear Equations (6-9)
Using science investigations, business situations, and geometric patterns
as the context for studying linear patterns known as algebraic linear
functions.
- Use real-world situations to help students organize data,
graph ordered pairs, and write rules.
Materials: Looking at Lines book, 3 x 5 Mirrors, Wooden Cubes
Marvelous Multiplication (4-6)
Helping students master the concepts and operations of multiplication
and division.
- Master the concept of place value at concrete and representational
stages
- Develop meaning for multiplication and division at concrete and representational
stages
- Use models and algorithms to construct understanding
- Explore historical connections and alternate ways to multiply and
divide
- Practice basic facts to achieve 100% mastery

Multiplication the Algebra Way (6-9)
Using the familiar context of arithmetic to introduce and reinforce key
concepts, with emphasis on the distributive property, integers, and pattern
generalization.
- Focus on the distributive property as it bridges arithmetic to algebra
- Connect expanded notation and algebraic expressions
- Explore multiple representations of integers
- Model addition and subtraction of integers
- Incorporate integers in algebraic expressions and equations
Materials: Multiplication the Algebra Way book, Base Ten
Set, Fractional Transparencies
Proportional Reasoning (6-9)
Using manipulatives and visual representations to discover patterns and
master proportional reasoning.
- Engage students with aerial photography and shrinking plastic
to apply proportional reasoning skills
- Help students use prior knowledge of fractions to enter the symbolic
world of algebra
Materials: Proportional Reasoning book, 30-meter Fiberglass Tape,
Fraction Pattern Blocks
Solving Equations (6-9)
Exploring the big ideas of equality and inverse operations that are needed for solving equations through the varied contexts of hunting treasure, maintaining inventories, and exploring magic tricks.
- Use hands-on methods to solve equations
- Teach students to transition from concrete to abstract solution methods
