Collaboration Makes Unique Professional Learning Opportunities

screen-shot-2016-11-22-at-4-38-37-pm The AIMS Center for Math and Science Education is happy to be in a cooperating partnership with H.O.P.E. for K-8 Education (Hosting Ongoing Professional Experiences), an educational non-profit organization in Garden City, Michigan. H.O.P.E. for K-8 Education is also in collaboration with Schoolcraft College, a comprehensive community-based college located in Livonia, Michigan, with a satellite campus in Garden City, Michigan. Founder Dr. Michelle Cline has spent over 30 years in education, as a classroom teacher, consultant, and administrator (including the position of district superintendent). She has been one of our AIMS Facilitators for more than 20 years.

Dr. Cline’s vision is to successfully provide learning experiences for both teachers and students. H.O.P.E. for K-8 Education uses hands-on, content rich, conceptually-based math and science tasks written by AIMS in a workshop setting. Michelle believes that using AIMS tasks that are aligned with state and national standards is a plus for the teachers that come to H.O.P.E. She further supports them as they plan to infuse their curriculum with these rich tasks.

Michelle recognizes that all teachers need time to think and plan for their classroom, without losing instructional time with their students. She knows the difficulties of having a substitute teacher cover one’s classes.  Therefore, a unique experience offered through H.O.P.E. is a student field trip, where students engage in activities that are aligned with Common Core State Standards for mathematics and ELA, as well as the Next Generation Science Standards. These are set in the form of Mystery Festivals with CSI-like investigations. While the students are engaged in the investigations, the teachers use the time to plan and/or participate in screen-shot-2016-11-22-at-4-39-20-pmprofessional development. In this way, there is no need for substitute teachers or the need to create lesson plans. Teachers will leave with a document indicating the standards being addressed with the students through the investigations. All the participating teachers need to do is plan how to effectively use their time while their students are engaged in meaningful activities.
