Line Symmetry through Cultural Art: Notans and Papel Picado

Symmetry is all around us. We recognize it when we see it in flowers, butterflies, and even in our own bodies. It’s a sense of balance and is a powerful concept related to geometry and spatial reasoning. This series of activities introduces participants to the concept of line symmetry and applies this idea through two culturally influenced projects - Notans and Papel Picado. The making of these projects will allow participants to apply and deepen their conception of line symmetry in art while appreciating the cultures in which these types of artistic expressions originated.
