Teaching Math in an Art Classroom: A Collaboration of Creativity

Leslie Batty
Art Teacher
Sunnyside High School, Fresno Unified

Aileen Rizo
Associate Director, PK-12
AIMS Center

Symmetry is all around us. We recognize it when we see it in flowers, butterflies, architecture and in works of art. It can be described as a sense of balance and is a powerful concept related to geometry, spatial reasoning and elements of visual art. Should symmetry be taught in math class or in art class?

In this collaborative presentation, participants will hear from a mathematician and an artist who set on the journey of collaboratively teaching math in an art class at a local high school. They will share the process of looking at research, the lessons on symmetry they created together, examples of students’ work, and their passion for seeing this type of intentional collaboration grow throughout the central valley and beyond.
